Project #52 : Week #1

-

I’m pretty determined to put my all into starting a Project 365 after seeing how some people actually complete the entire cycle of religiously, almost-obsessively posting a picture every.single.day of the year to a full 365-day succession.

Man, these people really have THAT much inspiration. A post Every single day.

Still, I need to get something going, or the only traffic on my blog would be a gruel mixture of spider webs and dust. So after observing many cases of Project 365 gone wrong and ending up as Project 25-and-that’s-it, or Project 46-and-I’ve-got-nothing-else-to-post, here’s what I’ve decided.

To do a little math and divide 365 by 7. So I end up with Project 52. Tadaaa. The lazy bugger in me prevails. One pic per week seems pretty doable.

So week #1’s pic is no other than what I discovered lying in my mouth this morning, in a rather gross fashion.

On the top left, just behind my molar is a nasty nasty swell that for two days, has threatened to reduce my sanity by about half, with a major toothache that pulled up to my temples and down to my neck.

Apparently a molar decided to wait 28 years, and chose New Year’s day to finally emerge. Dammit I was doing fine without you all the while, molar, who summoned you out?

The surgery should be somewhere end of this week, and I’m really not looking forward to it. Wot a way to start off 2011.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

Daikanyama : This place ain’t a bar or restaurant!

-

The name Daikanyama didn’t sound like anything in particular to me. I knew it’s Japanese when I first heard it, and only after googling, found out that it was one of Tokyo’s hippest shopping neighbourhoods in Shibuya.

http://www.visa-news.jp/tokyostyle/02daikanyama.html

Last week, I was invited for a food review in Daikanyama TFR36F

…..Bar & Restaurant, that is Smile

Located in the ever-growing-in-popularity Changkat Bkt Bintang, Daikanyama is actually a Japanese Restaurant & Bar.

alt

It’s not the typical conveyor-belt Japanese restaurant. There’s way too many of those around…way too many. Those practically jump out at you, yelling ‘We sell [insert seafood]-sushi here, come on in!’.

Instead, it’s in the likes of joints like Rakuzen, but without the blanket of any formality.

alt

In fact, it was supposed a food review, but honestly it didn’t feel like one. I had too much fun. Open-mouthed smile

I finally met @therealbryanlim, and @nicolekiss + @caseyliew that I ain’t seen for ages!

The last time we met was at Bellygood in Sunway, and we didn’t connect as well as we did in Daikanyama. Maybe it’s the multiple lychee-something cocktails that she had this time. Alcohol does have pleasant side-effects sometimes.

Each one of us was greeted by a welcome drink…

Mine was the Kara Tei –                                                         This was what Psychkin had. Choya Umeishu, Campari Bitter, Malibu and Contreau.                                 Umeishu based with a tinge of sour in it.

                                                                                                     Ladies would like this one.

If you check out their menu, you’ll notice that almost all drinks, especially in the DKYM originals are pretty, well, original. Thanks to main chef and owner, Edwin Yau, we could all try concoctions like never before Open-mouthed smile

(L) Edwin Yau : Main Chef & Owner. (R) @Rudylafaber – thanks for the invite. Smile

I totally loved how we were at liberty to order anything we wanted. Anything and as much as we wanted *greedy face*

So you can imagine my face when I checked out the menu for the night. Nomnomnom.

As usual, I’m gona summarize the dishes before going into details, in case you’re in a hurry and don’t wana read the full post.

Our of all the dishes, I was completely in love with at least 4 of them. They’re flavorful, carefully crafted, and look like chef’s tapas-sized love on a plate. I was impressed by how un-standardized and un-commercialized the food was. Of course you will find some selections to be common with other restaurants, but I guarantee you will be delightfully surprised by many of them. Definitely coming back to this joint!

And here’s some of the grub to share:

Nasu Dengaku :
Unheard of to me, but it’s Eggplant with Miso
(Sweet + Salty).. totally flavorful combo.

Scallop Pizza :
If you love Scallop, pizza, and mushrooms, this is a must have…aaah..

Lamb Yaki :
Succulent, savory, young juicy lamb in sweet teriyaki sauce. There
was a piece I bit into with a bit of grainy tendon though.

Salmon Truffle Oil Tataki :
Fried potato strips riding fresh salmon riding a layer of mash potatoes
below. Would have been perfect if the salmon was lightly smoked instead.

Unagi Tofu Age :
Inside this smooth tofu cake is a surprise piece of unagi!

Saikoro Steak :
Juicy, tender, beef cubes soaking up Wafu sauce. This one
tasted superb from first bite til last chew..a total joy. aaaah..

Soft Shell crab with Salmon Maki :
I prefer my crabs and salmon separate though Open-mouthed smile

This one was a total fireball..burning hot stuff.

I’m talking about the Hadouken Fireball guys, in addition to the bubbly, fiery Elle Sia. Winking smile

Daikanyama has a very cool loft upstairs with its own bar and DJ console. And if you’re looking for a civilized crowd, forget places like Jln P Ramlee. Come to Changkat instead, and check this joint out.

A chance to win Fireflyz Tickets to Borneo!

-

I should have posted on this much earlier than now. But while I was away in Vietnam, for some reason, my blog wouldn’t load! Deprived wei.

Soooo, now we all know that Firefly is finally opening up its airways to Sabah & Sarawak.

..And most of us also know that there’s already some ticket giveaways happening on some of my kawan’s blogs:

http://www.tianchad.com/2010/12/contest-firefly-airline-ticket-giveaway.html

http://www.liewcf.com/giveaway-fireflyz-twitter-6832/

http://bryanlyt.com/2010/12/contest-firefly-airlines-ticket-giveaway/

http://jasonmumbles.com/2010/12/fly-to-kuching-and-kota-kinabalu-with-firefly

…And chances are if you check out those links now, it’ll be too late. The contest would’ve closed, there’ll be lesser tickets to be given away.

So this is where I come to the rescue. Because I procrastinated and posted this late, I actually became your last resort to pick up some tickets.. hah…!

Without further ado, here’s what you’ve gota do.

1.  Leave a comment on this post on at least 5 tips of awesome places to hangout in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu (any activity / food / babes / travel) that you know of. You might have to do some reading, and here’s a good place to start Winking smile

2.  Go to Firefly’s FB page and ‘Like’ it. It’s not compulsory but it’ll be great if you could.

3.  Follow @Firefly on Twitter if you would like to.

4.  You must follow @euveng (me!) on twitter, and make at least 100 of your friends do the same. I’m kidding haha. But it WILL be easier if you do follow me so you can see my tweet if you DO win Smile

And if you could ‘Like’ this post (bottom of page) or RT my tweet in addition to your comments, you are awesome. Winking smile

This week, 2 pairs of return tickets will be given away to the best answer, and winners go to either Sabah or Sarawak, depending on your answers (eg if you answered 5 places to hangout in Kota Kinabalu and yours is the best answer, you’ll get the Sabah tickets).

And as usual, here are several points to note:

  • Vouchers are valid for travel from 15th January 2011 till 24th January 2011.
  • Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights, public holidays, school breaks and weekends.
  • Booking must be made using the voucher at least 21 days before travel date and subject to confirmation.
  • Firefly’s staff and immediate family are not eligible for this contest.
    • Airfare is fully paid for except airport tax & other fees.

If lady luck’s with you, you could be headed to some sexeh holiday destination yo.

So wait no more, plug in your answers and you may be that lucky winner to be sent to Borneo!

Cheers!
